Bereavement Information

Bereavement support for weekly paid employees grants three days of paid time off in the event of the death of an immediate family member. Immediate family includes grandparents, parents, stepparents, parents-in-law, spouses and domestic partners, children, and stepchildren.

MGH Policy as written

In the event of a death in the immediate family, the Hospital will grant three (3) days of time off with Bereavement Pay. This time off will be granted even if the employee isn’t arranging for and/or attending a service or funeral. Generally, the three (3) days will be taken immediately after the notice of death. Bereavement Pay takes precedence over Earned Time.

The following are considered members of the immediate family: mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, grandmother, grandfather, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, brother, sister, wife, husband, and domestic partner. The mother, father, son, or daughter of a wife, husband, or domestic partner are also included.
